Mugla Sıtkı Kocman University Truffle Application and Research Center was established on March 24, 2015 with the regulation published in the official gazette no. 29305.
Truffles attract people from many different walks of life because of the mystery they have. It is a legend sought after by gourmets and chefs around the world, especially because of its unique aroma. Italy's white truffle (Tuber magnatum), France's winter black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) and summer black truffle (Tuber aestivum) are the most famous types of truffles sought in world cuisines, ranging from 200 euros to 3500 euros per kilo. These truffle species are just a few of the underground mushrooms. Truffle hunters encounter hundreds of different species of truffles from underground as they search for these precious species of truffles in the forest. While very few of these truffle species are very valuable for the kitchen, some are edible, but all have a very important role in the forest ecosystem.

The amount of truffle species with high economic value has decreased twenty times in the last hundred years. While the demand for truffle species worldwide is increasing day by day, the dramatic reduction in the amount of truffles has accelerated the cultification of truffles. France controls 45% of the world's truffle market, Spain controls 35% and Italy and other countries. The unique location and biological richness of the Mediterranean climate zone, where the truffle species of our country grow naturally, also gives an idea of the diversity of truffle species it possesses. In order for our country, which has a wide geography 1.5 times larger than France, to take its rightful place in the world truffle market, studies related to truffles are needed at the academic level. The most important task of universities towards society is to make sure that the university is not the most important part to produce information and to innovate the knowledge it produces and contribute to the welfare of the country.
